Film Studies Minor (Quarter Courses)
The Film Studies Minor is an interdisciplinary field of inquiry devoted to the analysis of cinema both as a unique art form in its own right, and as a medium influenced and shaped by related fields such as literature and the visual arts. Film Studies is a discipline distinct from film making, which focuses on skills of film production rather than film analysis. Students enrolled in the Film Studies Minor will gain an understanding of the evolution of cinema as an art form, the relations between cinema and other arts, and the international dimensions of the medium. The minor, housed under the umbrella of the Program of Film Studies, is offered cooperatively by the following departments: East Asian Languages and Literatures, English, French and Italian, Germanic Languages and Literatures, History of Art, Russian, and Spanish and Portuguese.
The minor in film studies requires the completion of one of the introductory courses listed below, plus 20 credit hours of course work chosen from the second list below. The introductory course must be completed before the declaration of the minor and, as with other minor course work; a grade of C- or above is required. While the minor may include courses from the introductory list, at least ten of the 20 credit hours must be at the 300 level or above. (This excludes the course used as the introductory course.) After completion of the introductory course, the student will meet with a faculty member on the Interdisciplinary Film Studies Committee to plan the minor course work. After the course work has been approved, the student may declare the minor in the college/school office. Here is the Film Studies Minor Checklist that can be used to plan courses as well as declare the minor.
